SPECULATIVE PACKAGING REBRAND
McKenzie’s dried legumes are a staple in Australian supermarkets, yet their packaging often relies on functional, low-cost plastic bags that do little to inspire confidence or curiosity. This project reimagines Yellow Split Peas as a contemporary, accessible product designed to sit proudly on the kitchen shelf rather than be hidden in the pantry.

The primary objective was to make the ingredient less intimidating for home cooks who may be unfamiliar with preparing dried legumes. Clear cooking instructions and macro-nutrient information are intentionally prioritised within the layout, reframing the product as convenient, nutritious, and straightforward to prepare.

I transitioned the format from a disposable plastic packet to a cardboard tub. This structural decision improves usability in several ways. The tub stands upright in storage, pours more easily, reseals cleanly, and can be repurposed once empty. The move away from soft plastic also signals a more sustainable approach to packaging, aligning the product with growing consumer expectations around environmental responsibility.

The colour palette is drawn from the ingredient itself. Soft yellow and warm brown create an earthy, approachable feel. Although only Yellow Split Peas were developed, the system was conceived to extend across the wider range. The primary hue could adapt for different legumes while retaining a consistent structure, allowing for both shelf cohesion and clear differentiation.

The result is a packaging concept that combines practicality with warmth, elevating a pantry staple into a considered, contemporary product.
